Using Latina Stereotypes to Make Money?

written by No Comments posted in Blog

Does it bother you, that as some of us fight to break the stereotypes about Latina women, Latino owned and operated companies continue to use those stereotypes and profit off of them? Maybe it’s just me.

In no way am I questioning the pride they have for their heritage.  I know it’s been a long hard fight, but are some just giving up and saying “if you can’t beat them, join them?”

I really want to support all Latino owned and operated businesses, but some of them aren’t really helping in the terms of breaking stereotypes. They just continue to support them. I say this because I saw a promo for an upcoming television “reality” show. I won’t go into specifics, because I’m not here to bash anyone one’s name. But, I can say, it revolves around “beautiful and sexy” Latina women. Now, don’t get me wrong. I think we are ALL beautiful and sexy women, but that’s not all that there is too us. We are such multi-faceted women!

Is this a lose lose situation? Will the sexy stereotypes continue, because sex sells? Will there ever be a television “reality” show about Latina women who succeed on all levels, not just by their physical appearance. What will it take to get these Latino owned and operated businesses to see that what they are doing is just hurting us more than helping us?

Am I making too much out of this? Or are these ads/promos not hurting anyone?

I’d love to know what you think!
