The Blogger and the Ego

written by 7 Comments posted in Blog

Wow…where do I even start. OK…let me first start out by saying, this is not directed to any one blogger. In fact, I’m writing this because my friends and I have dealt with many bloggers like this over the past few months. It’s kind of like an epidemic of some sorts.

“Ego” is defined as a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having high self-esteem or believing in yourself. What I’m going to talk about here is on a different level.

I’ve been blogging for over four years and I have met a lot of bloggers…from famous, popular, kinda known, to beginners. Yes, there are famous/celebrity bloggers like Perez Hilton, The Pioneer Woman, and The Bloggess out there. For the record, I’ve never met any of these three I just named. But I can tell you that the ones I have met are either extremely nice or not so much.

Hugs, shout outs, and high-fives to the popular bloggers who’ve always been nice and showed me respect on many levels and at many occasions!

I want to talk about those bloggers who are making a name for themselves, are getting contacted more than usual, and are starting to get noticed. It’s at this point when some of them let their egos take on another persona. If you’re constantly being rude, throwing fits because you didn’t get what you wanted, or always turning your nose up at other bloggers, then I think it might be time to step back and take a breather.

First of all…you’re a blogger. And as quick as your “popularity” comes, the quicker it can be taken away. It’s a proven and scientific fact (just kidding, I have no data to back this up). I have heard rumors of brands/companies refusing to work with bloggers because of monster egos.

Let’s not get a big head people! Staying humble and grounded will bring much more success and happiness in your blog life.

CAUTION: Sometimes bloggers are in bad moods, are dealing with real life issues, or are just shy. Give them the benefit of the doubt and don’t judge them right away. This post is targeted to the repeat-offenders (those who have been rude more than once).

Have you ever dealt with a blogger like this?

How did you deal with it?

How do you stay grounded?

    Big egos are just a lot of hot air. I try to stay away from mean snobby bloggers no matter what their status is or “what they can do for me”. I just don’t like that negative karma around me. And if others think I’m snobby — sorry. I’m not that bad once you get to know me better. {In case you were talking about me. LOL!! ;) }

You make some good points. Sometimes people need their space for personal reasons that they don’t want to exploit on sm. And that’s okay with me.

I haven’t had to deal with too many egos in the blogging community or maybe I’m too wrapped up in my own to notice others. I jest.

We actually had a discussion on this topic at a recent conference that I attended. Word always gets around to PR representatives about the bloggers with bad egos and are unlikely to work with them. Having integrity will take us much farther than a big ego.

My friend and I were emailing each other about this recently. The blogging world has changed so much, and unfortunately, not for the better. We both have unfollowed quite a few girls. I even deleted my twitter because the more “popular” bloggers were the ones who talked down to other bloggers and just created most of the drama. I’m so over it.

Unfortunately, because of some egos, this message is lost on those whom it most fits. I am a pretty small-time blogger and really shy but in my years blogging, I have run across one (actually 2) of those who have intentionally thrown their weight around. The good thing is that 99.99% of bloggers I have met have been really supportive, really pleasant, and really willing to share information with us small potatoes :) .

    Hi Monique!
Sigh. I just started 6 months ago and I am really starting to notice this. You might be right about people just going through stuff. I’ll stay away if the rudeness continues though!
