I see new bloggers enter our world almost every day. And more likely than not, they do something on their blogs that are big “no-no’s” in our blogging world. OK..I admit that even seasoned bloggers do them too. I’ve compiled a few “don’ts” below. I hope they come in helpful. The first two are major pet peeves of mine!
DON’T USE IMAGES/PHOTOS WITHOUT PERMISSION
Please do not use an image that you did not take yourself. Especially, without permission from the person who owns the photo. Copyright laws are strict, so make sure you do your research. If you need an image, do an online search for “royalty free images/clip art.” The internet may seem infinite, but some bloggers have been sued for using photos that don’t belong to them.
DON’T COPY OFF OF OTHER BLOGGERS, BLOGS, AND WEB SITES
Last week, I found a web site (similar to one of my blogs) that had copied from one of my pages. And lately I’ve been hearing of “competitors” stealing content from other bloggers as well. First of all, this is not cool and it’s not a competition people! Be creative and think of your own material! Geez! Copyright laws come into effect here too! Stealing is stealing!! Don’t do it!
DON’T FORGET TO DISCLOSE COMPENSATION & FREE STUFF
Getting paid for a post and free stuff is awesome. Just don’t forget to tell your readers it’s just that! The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) set out new Endorsement guidelines in 2009. Educate your blogger-self and don’t get caught up in an unnecessary and possibly sticky situation. Check out DisclosurePolicy.Org.
DON’T STEP ON OTHER BLOGGERS TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL
Success doesn’t happen overnight. And because of this, it’s kind of become a “dog-eat-dog” world out there. Stepping on and using other bloggers to get wherever it is you want to go is just wrong. In my opinion and from what I’ve experienced-a positive and empowering community is extremely helpful and beneficial to any blogger.
DON’T BECOME A DIVA
Ugh! Do I even need to explain on this one? LOL! No one likes a diva…especially brands (if that’s who you want to work with). They’ll drop you in second, believe me…I’ve seen it happen. Bloggers are getting more attention by the minute and sometimes this can go to their heads. Be genuine, hardworking, and appreciative. It will pay off in the end.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!
Sounding like an anti-drug commercial (LOL!), don’t be afraid to say no to an opportunity that isn’t a right fit for you and/or your blog. Be honest with the brand/contact person and tell them “Thank you for contacting me, but I’m going to pass on this for now. Please think of me for your next (enter blog niche here) opportunity.” Or something along those lines. This will also pay off in the end and someone who is a right fit will get to experience it.
DON’T FORGET TO BREATHE
We all know blogging can be stressful and sometimes we experience burnout. Especially, with what’s going on in our everyday lives. Please for your own sanity-don’t be afraid to stop, take a break, and breathe. Get up and walk away from the computer. It will help clear your mind and who knows what and when inspiration will hit.
DID I FORGET SOMETHING?
